An extraordinary — and extraordinarily early — vintage

The 1556 growing season in Burgundy began with an intense heatwave that set in from early spring and showed little sign of relenting. Contemporary accounts describe conditions so severe that ground temperatures reportedly burned the bare feet of local residents — a detail that, however anecdotal, gives some sense of just how far outside normal experience that summer fell for the people living through it. Drought followed the heat, stressing vines and forcing an unusually early ripening cycle. Grapes that would typically hang into autumn were ready for picking well ahead of schedule, producing a harvest date that stood as the earliest on record in Burgundy for nearly 470 years.

Reconstructing a vintage from before modern record-keeping

Understanding a growing season from 1556 requires a different kind of detective work than analysing a modern vintage. Researchers piecing together the climate of that year have relied on archival records — parish accounts, municipal registers, and other documentary sources that note harvest dates, weather events, and agricultural conditions — cross-referenced against proxy climate data such as tree-ring records. Harvest-date archives are, in fact, one of the longest continuous climate proxies available to historians: because grapes are picked at a consistent stage of ripeness each year, and because vineyards kept records for economic reasons, the date of the harvest itself becomes a reliable stand-in for how hot and dry a given growing season was, stretching back centuries before formal temperature measurement existed. This is how researchers can speak with some confidence about a heatwave that predates the thermometer.

Faith as climate response

One of the more striking aspects of the 1556 season is how pre-industrial society responded to it. Lacking any capacity to irrigate at scale or otherwise intervene agronomically, communities turned to religious processions and public prayer, pleading for rain to break the drought. It's a detail worth sitting with: where a modern vineyard manager might adjust canopy management or irrigation scheduling in response to an unusually hot, dry spring, the response available in 1556 was fundamentally spiritual rather than technical. The vines simply endured what the season delivered.

Modern tools, modern buffers

Viticulture today has considerably more room to manoeuvre in the face of heat and drought stress. Canopy management — the deliberate manipulation of a vine's leaf cover to control sun exposure, airflow, and water demand — allows growers to protect fruit from excessive heat and slow the pace of ripening in a hot year. Irrigation, where permitted and available, offers another buffer entirely unavailable to sixteenth-century growers. These tools don't eliminate the effects of an extreme season, but they give modern vintners a degree of agency that simply didn't exist in 1556.

Why 1556 still matters in 2026

For centuries, 1556 held the record as Burgundy's earliest harvest — a benchmark that stood essentially unchallenged until it was finally surpassed in 2026. That a modern vintage has now overtaken a heatwave severe enough to burn feet and drive communities to prayer is a genuinely unsettling data point. It suggests that whatever forces produced one of the most extreme growing seasons in five hundred years of Burgundian history are now being matched — or exceeded — on a rolling basis in the present day, without the benefit of being a singular, once-in-a-half-millennium anomaly.

Researchers treat 1556 as a critical benchmark precisely because of this comparison: it offers a rare, well-documented example of what an extreme pre-industrial growing season looked like, against which the accelerating frequency of extreme modern vintages can be measured. The parallel isn't a perfect one — modern viticulture, modern climate science, and modern data collection are all vastly more sophisticated than anything available in the sixteenth century — but the underlying question the comparison raises is hard to shake: if 1556 was once considered the outer limit of what Burgundy's climate could produce, what does it mean that the present day is now routinely testing that limit?
