WINE KNOWLEDGE — YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
What is the difference between a Premier Cru and a Grand Cru in Burgundy?
In Burgundy, the classification system ranks vineyards by quality rather than estates. Grand Cru is the highest tier — there are only 33 Grand Cru vineyards in the whole of Burgundy, covering less than 2% of the region's total vineyard area. Premier Cru is the next level down, still representing exceptional quality from specific named vineyard sites. Below these sit Village wines, named after their commune, and regional Bourgogne wines. Grand Crus are among the world's most sought-after and age-worthy bottles; Premier Crus offer outstanding quality at a more accessible price point.
What does biodynamic wine mean?
Biodynamic winemaking is an approach to viticulture and winemaking that goes beyond organic farming. It treats the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem, following a lunar calendar for vineyard and cellar work, using natural preparations to enhance soil health, and avoiding all synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers. The philosophy is rooted in the work of Rudolf Steiner and is certified by organisations such as Demeter. Many of the world's most celebrated wine producers — including Domaine Leroy in Burgundy and Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace — farm biodynamically, believing it produces wines of greater complexity and terroir expression.
What is a Cru Classé in Bordeaux?
The Bordeaux Classification of 1855 ranked the finest châteaux of the Médoc (plus Château Haut-Brion from Graves) into five tiers, from Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) to Cinquième Cru Classé (Fifth Growth). Only five châteaux hold Premier Cru status: Mouton Rothschild, Margaux, Latour, Lafite Rothschild, and Haut-Brion. Saint-Émilion has its own separate classification, with Pétrus — arguably Bordeaux's most famous wine — sitting outside any official classification entirely. Cru Classé wines are considered the benchmark for fine Bordeaux and are among the most collectible bottles in the world.
What is the best way to store fine wine at home?
Fine wine should be stored in a cool, dark, vibration-free environment at a constant temperature between 10°C and 14°C, with humidity around 70%. Bottles sealed with cork should be stored on their sides to keep the cork moist and prevent oxidation. Avoid storing wine near strong light, in the kitchen, or anywhere subject to temperature fluctuation. For serious collectors, a dedicated wine fridge or professional storage facility is the ideal solution. At Blanco & Gomez, we can advise on both home storage solutions and professional cellarage options.
What is the difference between Vintage Port and Tawny Port?
Vintage Port is made from the finest fruit of a single declared vintage year, bottled after two years in wood and designed for decades of bottle ageing — it is deep, dark, and intensely fruity when young, developing extraordinary complexity over time. Tawny Port, by contrast, is aged in small oak barrels for an extended period — 10, 20, 30, or 40 years — during which it gradually takes on a tawny amber colour and develops nutty, dried fruit, and caramel characteristics. Vintage Port is best laid down for 15–30 years; Tawny Port is ready to drink immediately and should be served chilled.
Which wines make the best gifts?
The best wine gifts depend on the recipient's taste and the occasion. For a guaranteed impressive gift, a bottle from a prestigious appellation — a red Burgundy, a Bordeaux Cru Classé, a vintage Champagne, or an aged Rioja Gran Reserva — rarely disappoints. For something more unusual and personal, consider a wine from an emerging region the recipient may not have tried, or a magnum for a celebration. At Blanco & Gomez, we offer gift wrapping and personalised recommendations — visit us at 410 King's Road, Chelsea, or order online with UK-wide delivery.
What food pairs well with Champagne?
Champagne is one of the world's most food-versatile wines. Non-vintage Brut Champagne pairs beautifully with oysters, smoked salmon, soft cheeses, and light canapés. Blanc de blancs — made entirely from Chardonnay — works especially well with seafood and sushi. Richer, aged prestige cuvées can handle roast chicken, lobster, and even truffle dishes. Rosé Champagne pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, strawberries, and light red fruit desserts. As a general rule, avoid pairing Champagne with very sweet foods, which can make the wine taste harsh.
What is the difference between Malbec from Argentina and Malbec from France?
Malbec originated in southwest France — particularly in Cahors, where it is known as Côt — but it has found its most celebrated expression in Argentina's Mendoza region. French Malbec tends to be more rustic, tannic, and earthy, with darker fruit and higher acidity. Argentine Malbec — particularly from Mendoza and the high-altitude Uco Valley — is typically richer, rounder, and more fruit-forward, with velvety tannins and flavours of ripe plum, blackberry, and violet. The difference in altitude, sunshine intensity, and winemaking philosophy produces two quite distinct expressions of the same grape.
What does "natural wine" mean?
Natural wine is a loosely defined term for wine made with minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar. Natural winemakers typically farm organically or biodynamically, harvest by hand, use wild yeasts for fermentation, add little or no sulphur dioxide as a preservative, and avoid fining or filtration. The result can be wines of extraordinary originality and character — but also, in less careful hands, wines that are unstable or faulty. There is no official legal definition or certification for natural wine, though organisations like La Renaissance des Appellations and various natural wine fairs help identify producers committed to the approach.
How do I know when a wine is ready to drink?
Most wines sold in shops are ready to drink immediately. However, fine wines — particularly red Burgundy, Bordeaux Cru Classé, Barolo, Vintage Port, and top Riesling — benefit from cellaring and will reward patience. A general guide: entry-level fine wines need 3–5 years, mid-level Bordeaux and Burgundy 8–15 years, and great vintages from top producers 20–30 years or more. Wine merchants and critics publish drinking windows for specific wines and vintages. If in doubt, our team at Blanco & Gomez is always happy to advise on the right moment to open a specific bottle.
