🍷 Xosé Lois Sebio – Mencía ‘Coios’
Spain | Bierzo | Mencía
Style: Still Red Wine | Winemaking: Hand-harvested from old vines rooted in stony, slate-laced soils (“coios” means river stones). Fermented with native yeasts and aged in used French oak barrels to showcase purity, minerality, and elegance
Farming: From low-intervention, sustainably farmed vineyards in Bierzo’s mountainous terrain, where altitude and ancient soils create wines of freshness and terroir-driven character
🪨 A soulful and mineral Mencía—vibrant, earthy, and strikingly expressive.
👁 In the Glass:
Deep garnet with a violet rim—intense and energetic.
👃 On the Nose:
Aromatic and lifted. Notes of wild raspberry, black cherry, and violet are layered with graphite, crushed stone, and a hint of savoury spice.
👅 On the Palate:
Fresh and finely textured. Juicy red fruit flavours glide over taut acidity and silky tannins, balanced by an underlying stony minerality. Complex yet elegant, with a long, precise finish that hums with energy and place.
🍽 Food Pairing:
Perfect with chargrilled lamb, roasted duck, earthy mushroom dishes, croquetas de jamón or Galician-style octopus. A brilliant wine for thoughtful pairings and rustic cuisine.
⏳ Ageing Potential:
Delicious now, but will evolve gracefully over 5–8 years, gaining depth and savoury complexity.
✨ Why You’ll Love It:
Xosé Lois Sebio’s ‘Coios’ is Mencía at its most honest and expressive—vibrant, mineral, and beautifully made. A true taste of Bierzo’s ancient vineyards and independent spirit.
